Considerations

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jetty Dive

8.5

4
(0.5 - 15)

X

Watch for fishing lines, hooks and debris.
Jetty vis can become extremely poor after storms. Excellent for novice diver. Not as sheltered a some think, due to being on the shore.

River Dive

14

2+/-
(0.5 - 4)

X

River dive, be careful in regards to boat traffic, vis is usually poor these days but is clearing up. Watch for changing currents. Lots of metal debris from dumped vehicles and sunken barge.

Reef Dive

7

6
(4 - 15+)

X

What a pretty dive site this is. The actually site is suitable for a novice but you may need to be an experienced mountaineer as getting in and out is the tricky part over the rocks. This is a fair weather site.

Jetty Dive

8 - 15

3
(0.5 - 6)

X

Next to a working jetty.  Minimal places to set down comfortably due to seabed make up. Watch for over head pylons if ascending under the jetty, entanglement possibilities. Poor weather site.

Wreck Dive

3.5

5
(One dive only)

X

Somewhat pointless dive, shallow and nothing much to see. Next to ALCOA jetty so potential for boat traffic. Not much of the wreck left. Protected.

Groin : Jetty

10 +/-

5
(2 - 8)

 X

Boat traffic. Potentially difficult entry/exit points. Potential for numerous little dive sites around the groins, silty site. Offers protection on very rough days.

 Jetty

15 +/-
Shallow 4 - 6

6
(2 - 10)

X
The jetty is approx. 600 meters long so watch your air. Shallow dive 4 - 6 meters until the end or the T,  it drops off quite rapidly. I would not dive at the end if a boat is docked just in case it starts up its engines.
Groin : Jetty

3 - 4.5

 2
(One dive only)

X

Short shallow and overall a pointless dive, but if its short and shallow you want try Wells Park Jetty fisrst. Another one for the kids this one.

Reef Dive

5 - 7

6
(2 - 15+)

X

Weather dependant. Need low swell +/- 1m and preferably a low Easterly wind. Dive Early with a Southerly wind. Boat traffic and bathers. South reef is nicest spot here.

Reef Dive

3 - 7

 6
(2 - 10)

X

This is a fair weather site, more than 1 meter swell and you may as well bring your weekly laundry and detergent. However some brilliant little swim thru's and ledges, a must if you can.

Groin : Wreck

8.5

6
(4 - 6)

X

Two in one dive site, dive the mole, or explore the Gareenup Wreck. Risky entry/exit consider bringing a rope. Only real Sheltered spot north of the river. Dive in a max. 1.8m swell. Regular boat traffic.

Wreck : Groin

3 - 7+

6+
(One dive only)

X

The wreck is a shallow dive, definitely one for the kids or if you have a few bar to use up. The groin is just a groin, you may get some shelter with strong Northerly wind, you may get some depth at the end.

Jetty Dive

15

0.5
(One dive only)

X

In simple terms don't bother, new jetty, nothing growing, very silty, maybe good for prawning...but...
"Howie don't prawn !!!"
There is a few bits off to the East of the jetty.

Reef Dive

3 - 8

 6
(0.5 - 15+)

X

Weather dependant. Low swell and low Easterly wind for the outer reefs. Can dive in shallows in moderate conditions. Surge varies from playful to annoying. There are easy access caves/chambers.

Jetty - Seagrass

8.5

 6
(0.5 - 15)

X

Boat traffic. Jetty not visible from surface obtain correct bearings before descending. Seagrass area can extend dive area considerably. Consider here before Ammo on rough days.

Wreck Trail

11 - 18

 3
(0.5 - 8)

YES
(not in winter)

Vis is generally poor. Can dive in poor conditions when other sites are weathered out. Lots of schools come here. Good depth. 6 wreck areas. Generally gets a bit cleaner with a Northerly wind, but affects current.

River Dive
8.5

5
(One dive only)

X
Its the river so be careful. Entry and exit up and down the steps are OK but watch you footing. Steep drop off right the shore entrance.
Groin : Seagrass

7

5
(One dive only)

X
A lot of effort for not a lot of reward. Consider entering at Bather Beach if you really want to dive here. Entry and exit over the groin is obviously the main danger/risk. Don't swim into mouth of port

Reef Dive

1 - 7
(7 at a push)

 5
(2 - 10+)

X

Surfers beach, any swell and its a washout, need perfect weather. -1 meter swell, swell period  of 11 seconds, calm easterly winds, the moon in the right phase and a word in the Big Mans' shell like....

 Wreck : River

 18 - 22

0.5+/-
(One dive only)

 X

This place is a dark cold murky hole, make sure your soul is well secure before you descend to the depths of hell...... ok, ok, its not that bad but it is dark down there, take a torch, big swim out, working river.

Wreck : River

 9 - 12

3
(0.5 - 6)

X

Easy dive spot, consider boating traffic plus the wake from passing boats, this is a working/recreational river. Vis is affected by tannin at the top column of water and silt in the lower section.

Artificial Reef

9 - 15

2+/-
(One dive only)

X

Remnants of an old long forgotten man-made reef, simply put nothing there but a HUGE Lionfish. We dived here in storm weather and it was pretty flat, so has some sheltered properties, I wouldn't rush back.

Jetty : Groin : Wreck Dive

4

10+
(One dive only)

X

What can you say, tiny dive site, with tiny marine life, I love it. If I was teaching my kids to dive, this is where I would take them. Its so shallow if you had 50 bar I would still think you could get a decent dive out of it.

Groin : Seagrass

9

5
(2 - 8
)

X
Sheltered from southerly winds. Watch for people fishing off the groin. Be careful swimming into the sea grass as this is where they can cast into. Safer to enter via the beach, but some enter over rocks south side.

 Reef

4

2
(One dive only)

X
Conditions need to be perfect, gets mucky and surgey with minor changes in weather conditions. Cannot dive inside the reef when life guard flags are out. Strong under current on exiting, exit by life guards inside reef

 *

I have included the average visibility for each dive site, however I am somewhat anti-average vis stats....... in simple terms the vis is what it is when get in there and descend. So much affects water quality that it is impossible to determine exactly what the quality of visibility is going to be, even with an  " on paper perfect day". However, for some strange reason people seem to like having these details so I have included them here. I have also included in the brackets below the ranges of vis that I have dived these sites.
