Kayak Diving....... how much fun can you have diving ?....... how many more dive sites can you open up ?
Two of the questions I asked myself when I thought of using my kayak to go diving. The first question was answered easily enough...... loads of fun as long as you do not mind looking like a bit of an ass, with a tiny kayak loaded up like a back-packers camper-van going on a tour of Australia. And you dont mind getting a bit wet before you are supposed to, because you are at some point going to capsize and end up in the drink before you arrive at your dive site.
The second question...... we will just have to wait and see...... but I am thinking a lot more than is accessible from a shore doing a surface swim.
Disclaimer: To the Novice Diver, it's not my place to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, for all I know you could be a champion kayaker and this is simple stuff for you. However all I am going to say is get your diving sorted out first before you add something extra in to the mix, kayaks can take you further than a surface swim and the last thing you need is to be struggling with extra and unfamiliar equipment. I would advise anyone to play about in the shallows first especially if you have never tried this before, get to know some of the pitfalls and try and iron these out, possibly get some kayaking time under your belt before going out with diving equipment. I thought we had comprehensively considered the rigging, entry, exit strategies for this adventure, in reality we were wrong and needed some shallow time to point this out and that it is not as easy as you think.
