POINT PERON
Rockingham
Rockingham
- Shore Dive: Limestone Reef & Sea-grass areas.
- Dive
Area: The dive area around Point Peron/Cape Peron is massive and giving
specific details here is a little pointless because it all depends on
where you dive. But simply put Point Peron has something for everyone,
from snorkelling in the shallow areas, to some decent depth at the outer
reefs and lovely vis.
- Depth: Max 10+/- meters.
- Dive Conditions: Ideally 1 meter swell, 11 second swell period, gentle easterly winds. However I have dived this in worse conditions with a 1.8 swell and managed to dive here..... just about. As this is not sheltered it feels the effects of SW swells and winds, however as there is some depth around this site and some holes, caves and swim thru's you can get into a nice dive is still achievable when the conditions are not perfect.
-
Dive Flag at site: No.
Considerations
- This is a massive dive area, with the potential for lots of little dive spots.
- There is limestone reef which can fail and is notoriously crumbly. Formed by the limestone is lots of little accessible spots, including caves, swim thru's and overhangs.
- There isn't a lot of boat traffic but Point Peron is renowned for its Dolphins and Seals and hence you will get the occasional Dolphin watching vessel come in really close to shore.
- To access some of the better spots you have to complete a 300 meter snorkel to the reef.
- Getting caught up/stranded on shallow parts of the reef.
POINT PERON DIRECTIONS
-
This site is about 10 minutes away from the Town of Rockingham, its about 25 minutes from the City of Fremantle and, about 50 minutes from Perth CBD.
-
In short you need to find your way to Point Peron Rd, make sure you put in Point Peron Rd in Google maps, it may not be 100% sure otherwise, or if you have one, page 444 of the UBD Perth St Directory.
- Follow Point Peron Rd to the end you will have two options, left or right, go left, follow the road around ignore the little car park on the left (unless you are diving Clarkes Canyon, see Point Peron Caves in Dive Too) and follow the road around to the right, this will take you to views overlooking the dive site, which is basically looking out to sea. Try and park as close to the end as possible, just to make it easier on yourself.
- Kit
up in the car park, there are no toilet facilities here but if you are
really desperate you can find some situated on Point Peron Rd. Secure
your possessions and lock your car. Make a decision on which area you want to dive and explore.
