Point Peron Outer-Inner Reef
Swell & Wind Dive Chart

Below is a catalogue of the marine conditions that I have dived at Point Peron.

Many divers and diving websites recommend certain "best" conditions to dive at the outer reef at Point and up until recently I was always reluctant to dive here unless the waters were pretty much smooth as glass, which in all honesty very rarely happens.  And certainly never seems to happen on my day off and, I have a buddy who is free to dive on this glorious mythical day when the conditions are so perfect. In fact in two years these conditions have only happened once for me and if you have read my Point Peron page you will know what happened on that day.

However I have taken some minor chances to test which are the best and worst conditions that you can actually dive around Point Peron. My initial thinking is that they dont have to be perfect to have a great dive.

Most reccommend a low or at least no more than a 1 meter swell with a low Easterly wind. All they have forgotten to throw in, is a boat to Rottnest, a free lunch and someone to carry your luggage......... things just aren't that good so, here is a catalogue of my recent dives at Point Peron.

As I dive here more, I will add the information about the conditions I have dived in, because I have now found out this is a beautiful little dive site and more people should get to see it.

To the novice diver & Disclaimer: Always dive within your limits, do not accept that if the information below is similar to the day you wish to dive Point Peron that the water conditions will be identical. This is a rough guide and a catalogue of my experiences, many things will effect water and dive conditions. Ideally dive with someone who has experience of this area, limestone reefs are not stable environments and a strong surge can crash you into the rocks and the swim can be extremely tiring. The information contained here are averages as marine conditions can vary from hour to hour and moment to moment.

Dived between the shallow reef area and the outer reefs as a test dive. I have to say it was perfect. Great vis minimal surge. But not the outer reefs.

Great conditions to dive. Swell and surge were playful. Vis beautiful. We stayed mainly shore side of the outer reef in approx. 8 m depth.

If you like vomit producing surge and a really tough swim. Then today is your day. This is the worst I think I would consider. Vis awful, there had been high winds and rain the night before.

Good dive, a little surge but nothing unmanageable. Vis was most probably effected by previous days weather. Dived ocean side of reef down to 10 m.

I thought this day would of been perfect. However the tide was low which impacted on the surge around the reef... horrible

Another day I expceted to be perfect. It must be something to do with a low tide (0.86 m). Surge was in parts annoying & scary.

Starting think that one of the main effects on this dive area is tide hieght, again lowish at 0.89 m. Surge was a real pain.

Tide 0.86 m. Not as bad as previous day but, enough to throw you about. I think you need to just accept it and play with it.

Water conditions didn't look ideal with wind gusts creating surface waves. Vis wasn't brilliant in parts but overall very diveable.
